What changed May 1, 2026

Two power banks, kept in sight.

American Airlines now limits each passenger to two power banks, each rated under 100 Wh. Devices must travel in carry-on baggage, must remain accessible at all times (seat pocket, bag under the seat, or on the passenger), and cannot be recharged using the aircraft's USB ports or seat power.

Storage

On your person, not in the bin.

American specifies seat-back pockets, tray tables, or your person — not the overhead bin and not buried in a carry-on. The rule is about reaction time: if a battery overheats, crew need it within reach.

What this means for you

What matters.

Two power banks max

American's hard cap. Each must be under 100 Wh.

Never charge from seat power

You can use your power bank to charge devices. You can't charge the power bank itself in flight.

Stay visible

Out of the overhead, in the seat pocket or under the seat.

Why it matters

Same direction as the global rule.

American's policy mirrors moves by Southwest, United, Delta, and the ICAO global framework. The 100 Wh threshold itself hasn’t changed — what’s changed is where you store the charger and whether you can refuel it in flight.

Designed to be carried

15 colors. Pick yours.

The matte finish hides fingerprints, scuffs, and whatever happens after a long day.

Two Clutch Pros, under one limit.

Even bringing two Clutch Pros puts you at ≈37 Wh combined — well under American’s 100 Wh per-device cap.

Questions answered

Frequently asked

Is the Clutch Pro allowed on American Airlines?

Yes. The Clutch Pro is approximately 18.5 Wh (5,000 mAh × 3.7V), well under the 100 Wh carry-on limit every major airline uses.

Can I put a power bank in checked luggage?

No. Lithium-ion batteries must always travel in carry-on luggage. This is an FAA, EASA, CAA, and ICAO rule — no airline allows it.

How do I convert mAh to Wh?

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × voltage. For lithium-ion power banks, voltage is typically 3.7V. So 5,000 mAh ≈ 18.5 Wh, 10,000 mAh ≈ 37 Wh, 27,000 mAh ≈ 100 Wh.

What if my power bank is over 100 Wh?

Power banks between 100–160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two per passenger. Anything over 160 Wh is banned from passenger aircraft.
